Wearing light or dark color in hot weather?

From a scientific perspective, light-colored clothing effectively reflects sunlight. This makes it difficult for sunlight to penetrate the fabric and come into contact with the body. However, it not only blocks heat from entering but also hinders the release of heat from the body.

This means light-colored clothing acts as a barrier, preventing heat exchange between the body and the environment. With an average body temperature of 37 degrees Celsius, the difficulty in dissipating heat combined with the reflection of external heat will soon leave you drenched in sweat.

Following the same reasoning, dark-colored fabrics do not reflect heat from sunlight, so there’s no barrier blocking airflow. This allows body heat and environmental heat to exchange and circulate freely. As a result, you’ll feel cooler because you’re not “covered” in a layer of sweat on your skin.

So, should you wear light or dark colors in hot weather?

Science suggests that you can wear any color you like, as long as the clothing is loose-fitting and breathable.

A 1980 study published in Nature explained why the residents of the Sinai Desert (northeastern Egypt) choose long, loose, black garments to traverse the desert.

The results showed that the temperature difference between black and white clothing was almost negligible. Loose-fitting clothes allow air to circulate easily, helping to avoid the stifling heat of the desert.

Additionally, experts recommend wearing thick clothing during intense sunlight. This is because the temperature outdoors during scorching heat is higher than the body’s temperature. Thick clothing provides better protection against ultraviolet radiation from sunlight.
