Do you need a holiday to recover from your holiday?
I have a friend who’s passionate about backpacking—an adventurer who’s traveled across every corner of Vietnam.
She’s a master of motorbike riding, a pro at booking hostel rooms, and a champion at finding food deals. Back in her younger days, whenever a holiday break was announced, she’d hit the road immediately after her shift, often by the afternoon before the official break began. She’d sleep in makeshift camps, trek mountains, wade through streams, and sometimes I’d see her check in from a tent pitched right in the middle of a remote mountain pass. Limited travel funds and her straightforward, independent nature made her trips rough and rugged. Her goal was to go as far as possible and see as much as she could. She’d always return to the city just before 11 p.m. the night before her work resumed, completely drained of energy by the sun and wind. She often joked that she needed another short holiday to recover from her short trip.
Later, I thought things would change when she settled down with a family of her own. Surely her holidays would become calmer and more serene, as there were few corners of Vietnam left unexplored by her footsteps. But no! Fellow wives and mothers, you’ll understand what I mean. I imagined her married life would be warm and cozy, waking up to sunlight filtering through the attic windows of her house, not still chasing nature in some remote jungle stream. Yet, her holidays now seem like training camps for upper-body strength—helping prepare meals for her in-laws in the morning, scrubbing floors, setting up tables, and then running back and forth as a free waitress. She’d scarf down a quick meal, clear the dishes, and wash them. Afternoons were spent visiting her husband’s relatives, and she’d return home only to do laundry and clean up again. Holidays felt even more exhausting than regular days—working nonstop from dawn till dusk without the luxury of waiting for a deadline.
By the time she returned to her job, she’d still need a few days to adjust back to office life. Her first day back always left her looking drained and fatigued, just like the days she’d return from her motorbike adventures.
Whether she’s been a fearless explorer of Vietnam’s landscapes or a dedicated mother and wife, my friend always seems to need a secret holiday after the official one. So, ladies, whatever you do, don’t overwork yourselves or force yourselves into things you don’t enjoy. Holidays are meant for rest—to recharge and replenish your energy, not to exhaust yourself further to the point that your work productivity plummets afterward!
