Natural Feminine Scent

It’s strange how he was enchanted by the scent of my hair, deeply captivated by it.

He claimed he could pick out the natural fragrance of my hair amidst the mixture of other smells at the time. He joked, “I could compete with your dogs in scent detection!”

This little memory came rushing back today when I stumbled upon an article by author Trần Tiến, also talking about that unique and unforgettable scent…

“Boys love the scent of girls the most.”

Those who deny it are either lying or simply unaware. I am incredibly impressed by girls who look neat, have clean skin, and carry a light, captivating scent. A girl’s fragrance can reveal so much about her: intelligence, dynamism, romance, gentleness, and countless other admirable traits. I believe a girl’s natural scent is never unpleasant. Any terrible odors you’ve encountered have likely resulted from equally poor personal care choices.

When I was a child, burying my face in my mother’s lap was an extraordinary sensory experience. That soothing, magical scent awakened all my senses before lulling me into a dreamy sleep. As I grew older, I started to notice how my mother’s hair and neck carried a scent reminiscent of freshly baked bread and a warm fireplace. To me, that was the safest, most peaceful place in the world.

This feeling, I believe, isn’t much different from what the author Nguyên Hồng described when he leaned into his mother’s embrace in Trong lòng mẹ (In the Mother’s Heart). That’s why I felt so connected to that story during my school years. Around the same time, certain girls I encountered had fragrances that have lingered in my memory ever since.

Girls at that age weren’t allowed by their parents to use expensive perfumes yet were mature enough for their hormones to emit soft, alluring natural scents. Think of the word alluring in its lightest sense.

There were times when I strolled through narrow hallways, accidentally brushing past a group of popular girls, inhaling their distinct scents, and mentally cataloging them: “Let’s see, Sunsilk here, Dove there, this one’s foreign shampoo, and some baby powder too.” It felt like being overwhelmed in a floral garden, suffocating in a delightful way. But those moments passed quickly, leaving only fleeting impressions.

Back then, I had a crush on one particular girl. Every chance I got, I’d “accidentally” walk past her just to catch that mysterious, captivating scent of hers. I didn’t understand what it was, and I didn’t need to. All I cared about was spending parts of my youth aimlessly following her, indulging in that enchanting aroma. Once, during a school ceremony, I happened to sit next to her, and honestly, I almost fainted.

But scents come and go, leaving me behind with my wandering thoughts. As the fragrances faded, I grew up, encountering new ones along the way. I still remember the first time I caught the scent of a girl who would later become my girlfriend – and then, eventually, a stranger. At that moment, I was as thrilled as if Einstein had appeared before me, smacking Newton and sticking his tongue out playfully. I even started thinking about baby names.

Many days of my youth were spent burying my face in her blankets, drifting into the soundest sleeps I’ve ever had.

I once met a girl whose scent reminded me of burnt grass on a breezy late autumn day. The scent flooded my mind with chaotic memories, leaving me caught between past and future. The sensation of déjà vu mingled with an odd sense of Ah! was both unsettling and captivating. It pulled me back to my childhood, running through fields with other kids, then dragged me abruptly to the present, where a girl had just passed by, disappearing down the hallway. I stood frozen for a while, and later remained in a daze, regretting that I had let such a fleeting wonder slip away.
